The relauch of Brampton Brewery as a micro-brewery has been the realization of life-long dreams for many of those involved. But lets be clear about one thing: there was nothing at all micro about the original Brampton Brewery Company.
In its hey-day the brewery had a plant with a brew-length of 130 barrels and at busy periods they brewed 6 days a week - meaning a weekly production of almost 30,000 gallons of beer thats approximately a quarter of a million pints!.
Beleive or not, Chesterfield at one time had three breweries: Brampton, Chesterfield and Scarsdale. This made it the second largest brewing town in Derbyshire.
The success of the Chesterfield breweries has been attributed to the fine well water deep below the town. This enabled them to produce the good quality ales needed to combat the fierce competition from Sheffield brewers.
The original Brampton Brewery ran for 130 years, with a bottling plant, 142 public houses, 10 shops and 142 workers cottages to its credit. After several changes of ownership the house ceased brewing in the 1950s.
Sadly, the site of the Brampton Brewery is now occupied by a DIY superstore. However, in a peculiar twist of fate, this Do-It-Yourself phenomenon has proved central to its rebirth.
After an absence of more than 50 years Brampton Brewery was re-born in the winter of 2007. A small team of local ale enthusiasts, led by head-brewer Chris Radford, revived the company name and breathed fresh life into the legend.
A precision malt mill was built at Chatsworth Business Park just 200 yards from the original premises a heartfelt tribute to the enduring legacy of the original brewing beast.
The original Brampton Brewery's logo showed the muscular of a stonemason raising up a brick hammer with the words 'Health' and 'Strength' written crudely above it.
This now iconic image was an appreciative nod and a wink to the hundreds of thirsty workers at the 'Wasp Nest Brick Company' in Brampton whose engines were being refuelled daily by the Brewery.
Chris and the team not only revived the logo during their relaunch, they also took inspiration from the actual brick company themselves, naming one of their signature brews after it ...
Today this award-winning Micro-brewery operates three thriving cask-ale pubs, an off-sales shop and serves a local free-trade area covering Sheffield to the North, through to Burton in the South.
The brewery is home to a single Mash Tun, four fermenting vessels and produces up to 10,000 pints every week. We also provide full outside-bar facilities via hand-pump or gravity direct from the cask.
Brampton Brewery will continue to build on the legacy of its forebears in an innovative, precious fashion. And whilst many of the titles are new, a few old favourites remain ...
